Introducing the 7 Steps to Becoming a Trusted Authority

Postby Andrew McCombe » Mon May 14, 2012 10:31 am

Hi There Guys, I’m Andrew McCombe from Activate Your Business and welcome to the Become a Trusted Authority series.

Are you an Author, Coach, Speaker, Adviser, Consultant or Entrepreneur and you want to Position, Package and Project your Expertise to a larger audience for a lot less time, money and effort?

Would you like to create a business that is non location dependant, which means you can work anywhere in the world at any time?

Would you like to access a global market or markets with nothing more than your laptop and internet connection, from the comfort of your own office (or anywhere else that you choose to work), which means you can say goodbye to large office, staff and administration overheads and not to mention that daily grind of bumper to bumper traffic?

Would you like to free up your time to spend time with your family, travel, study, keep fit and healthy, play golf and do anything else that you are passionate about because a large part of your business will be automated by your website or your project based support team, that you only use as required and pay only for the tasks they perform?

Would you like to choose when you will work each day. Because your business is automated you will only do the work you love, when you want to do it and outsource the rest to people who love doing the work you don’t?

Would you like to create a business that is based around your passions and your talents so that you are always offering the most value to your clients or customers?

Of course you would, we all would

and by reading the 7 step “Become a Trusted Authority” series you will not only learn how to best position your yourself as a highly valued, trusted authority within your industry but also package and project your business in a way that is unique to you and to who you really want to be sharing your unique ideas with and in a way that will support you to add as much value as you can to as many clients as you want for a lot less time, money and effort.

Ok step one is available in the next post - enjoy...

Re: Welcom Andrew McCombe - 7 Steps to be an Authority

Postby Andrew McCombe » Mon May 14, 2012 10:40 am

Hi there, I’m Andrew McCombe from Activate your business and welcome to the first post in the 7 steps to becoming a trusted authority series.

The first step to becoming successful in any business is to:

1) get full clarity on what you want your business to be, do and have as if it was already very successful,
2) Remove any negative or limiting thoughts, feelings or behaviours that might be holding it back and then
3) Create and implement a step by step plan to make it happen.

The reason we do this is because your business will only be truly successful if it is in alignment with you and the way you want to create and deliver it.

To dig deeper on this concept, in the following paragraph you will see a very simple, yet very powerful formula, that underpins the entire 7 steps to becoming a trusted authority series and it goes like this…

Passions x Talents = Value x Leverage = Flow x Automation = a Business and a Life of EASE

When we combine our passions with our talents we offer the most value and when we leverage that value and automate it we create a business and a life of EASE.

As you can see the first two steps within this formula are to combine your Passions with your Talents and then make sure that everything about your business reflects these two steps, so that you will be offering the most Value to your customers and maximizing your fulfillment levels as a business owner.

Your passions provide the direction of which industry or market you want to play in (because obviously when you are passionate you will want to work in an industry or market that feels like play) and your talents will dictate the way you deliver your business to that market.

And because – when we combine our passions with our talents we provide the most value to our clients, the more likely they are to buy our products and services in the first place and on an ongoing basis, so it is an absolute must that if we are to become a trusted authority that we always create products, services and businesses that combine our passions and our talents.

Is this really possible?...Of course it is - but only when you get clear on what your passions are; So I now want you to do a little exercise for me - list all of your passions and once you have done this, try to identify which is your highest priority passion.

How’d you go finding your number one passion? Ok then your business should either be based around or have an element of that passion in it from now on.

Ok now that we are clear on our passions we need to combine them with our talents…and when I talk about talents I am not talking about being a good footballer or a chef or singer etc, but actually about how all human beings have an innate “path to wealth” and how when we identify what talents make up our individual path and we utilize them effectively we maximize our chance of our business success.

Our talents are an innate collection of our skills, strengths, gifts, knowledge and expertise and when we design our business around who we truly are, things will flow easily and if we don’t - they wont flow.

The good news is there are only eight specific talents needed to build wealth and we only need to apply the one that is specific to us to become wealthy.

There is an actual profiling tool that I use with my clients to identify their talents but because we can’t use it in this post, the 8 different talent profiles are;

Creator = Creates a better product
Star = Creates and becomes a unique brand
Supporter = Leads the team
Deal Maker = Brings people together
Trader = Buys low and Sells high
Accumulator = Collects Appreciating Assets
Lord = Controls Cash generating Assets
Mechanic = Creates a better system

Which talent profile do you think you are?:

I am sure one of the profiles will resonate with you more than the others and obviously without the profiling tool we can’t be 100% certain but intuitively you should have some idea.

Now here’s the cool part. Think about your highest priority passion and combine it with the talent you have identified and see what ideas start to flow as how you would like to project yourself as a trusted authority.

I can’t stress how important a step this is when it comes to activating the identity of your business – by getting clear on your passions and talents it will save you thousands of dollars because you won’t be searching aimlessly for opportunities and it will make you thousands of dollars a lot faster because you will be following your innate path and things will happen easily for you.

Another key element of Activating Your Identity is identifying the purpose of your business.- Because at the end of the day there has to be a reason over and above your passions and talents that gets you out of bed every morning – and it’s when the going gets tough that you can lean on your purpose to get you through.

It’s also your purpose that will differentiate you to your ideal customers and when combined with your passions and talents will provide your Unique Value Proposition.

Your Unique Value Proposition is what makes you a trusted authority in your market niche as it provides a solution to your ideal customers’ biggest problems.

To identify your Business Purpose try to answer the following questions.

- Why are you in Business? (or what is the ultimate outcome of your business for you?)
- What Problem(s) does your Business solve?
- Who does your business solve these Problem(s) for?
- What Outcome will your customers/clients get when this problem(s) is solved? (eg what are the benefits of you solving this problem?)
- What case studies, stories or testimonies can you provide to show what happens when someone uses your Product or Service?

Below you will see a 4 part system I get my clients to use to get clearer on their purpose and it goes like this…

1) I help (insert here)
2) Who (Insert Problem Here)
3) Ultimate Outcome
4) Case Study (EG here is problem, here’s what we did, here was the result)

If I was to use this system for my own business as an example, I would say:

1 I help Experts and Entrepreneurs
2 Who don’t know how to position, package or project their unique ideas
3 Become Trusted Authorities in their Market Niche

And as an example I would say…

4 I helped one client who had no brand awareness get interviews on three of Australia’s top current affairs shows (worth over $100 000 for free) positioning himself as the trusted authority and ultimately generating thousands of dollars to his businesses bottom line.

Another key element in this Activate Your Identity section is to get clear on your branding.

Once you are clear on all of your passions, talents, purpose and Unique Value Proposition then it’s time to identify an image, sound, name, uniform, book cover, business card, brochure, website look, website domain name etc that best represents your business.

Ideally what you come up with will become your brand.

To get more clarity on your brand take a minute to answer the following questions?

- What does your Business Look Like to you and your customers?
- What does your Business Feel like to you and your customers?
- What do you want your customers to say about your Business? And
- What do you think are the 5 key characteristics that represent your business;

Once you are clear on your brand remember, it is very important to reflect it in everything you do because your business is a mirror of you. So if you are out of alignment in an area of your life it will reflect through your business…and your customers will pick up on this.

In my opinion, what I have shared with you today will determine 90% of your business success, so it is vitally important that you get clarity on all of the key areas I have mentioned before you move on to the next post in this series.

As your trusted authority I want to finish today’s video with one question:

What is one action that you can take immediately to help you get even more clarity on your businesses identity?

Whatever you answered, have fun taking action on it and I challenge you to have achieved it before you read the next post.

And if you would like to speak with me personally about how I can support you to become a highly valued, trusted authority in your market niche then visit http://www.activateyourbusiness.com.au and click on the FREE Business Activation Session image for more details.

WOW - this is so extensive Andrew - I don't think I will have time to read everything and take it in, in one session!
I agree that it is so important to fully understand what a business person actually wants before you can help them achieve. Currently I am helping someone build a website, but it is very complex and I am not sure that the business operator realises that I can't build it until they give me the information on just what it is they want.

As a former school teacher, I will be able to aqueeze it out of her - but it could be painful!

Your 'talent profiles' makes an interesting list. Do you find that many people would fit into more than one on the list? I would think that I would fit into at least 2 and would more if the definitions did not concentrate on cash!

Cheers

Hi Barb

Thanks for your kind word and good luck facilitating the client re their website.

In regards to talents yes we all have more than one but one more than the others (if that makes sense) - ideally we should all focus on our major one and then get others whose major talent is the other ones to be in our team - that way everyone is in their flow...

Re: Welcom Andrew McCombe - 7 Steps to be an Authority

Postby Andrew McCombe » Tue May 15, 2012 6:26 pm

Hi there, I’m Andrew McCombe from Activate your business and welcome back to the second post of the 7 steps to becoming a trusted authority series.

I have decided to break each of these posts into 2 posts per step so you have more time to read them…I hope this helps you get even more understanding of the 7 steps. Ok here goes…

I often have clients telling me their concerns about who they think they should be versus who they want to be as a trusted authority and often this disconnect concerns them so much that they shy away from raising their public profile.

So I want to start today’s post by putting your mind at rest about thinking you have to be something you are not when it comes to being a trusted authority in your industry.

There is a common belief in traditional marketing circles that says in order to get clients you need to try and reach as many people as you can, by trying as many marketing strategies as possible, which effectively means you have to be almost everything to anyone in your marketing and business...

Well not here........To me this is far too overwhelming, too hit and miss and it creates the risk of attracting too many low-value, high maintenance clients that you don’t want to be working with in the first place.

Activate Your Business is more about using the law of attraction to design and attract your Perfect Clients...and perhaps the most powerful thing about attracting your perfect clients is that it is 100% controlled by you.

If you want a certain type of client then you have to be that type of person and business first and if you don’t want a certain type of client, then either a) don’t factor those attributes into your ideal client description and/or don’t be like that type of client yourself. – It really is that EASY!

Based on the law of attraction, your business and the clients that you attract are merely a reflection of yourself. So if you want more of something or someone then be it more and it will eventually manifest within your business environment.

Does this make sense?

Ok so how do we do this as trusted authorities in our businesses?

The best way I know to attract ideal clients is to use a system created by one of my mentors and friends Jan Stringer who wrote the book Attracting Perfect Customers and it’s as simple as answering the following 4 questions;

- What are the Qualities of your Most Perfect Clients?
- What makes your Perfect Clients Tick?
- What do you want your Perfect Clients to Expect of you?
- What do you have to improve in your business to be more 'Attractive' to your Perfect Clients?

Pretty simple hey!

Don’t be fooled by it’s simplicity though, because the more clear you are on your perfect client the easier it will be for you to target all of your marketing efforts towards them.

Ok...Now that you are clear on who your perfect clients are it's time to see if there is a market for your product or service.

You can have a great idea or a great passion but if no one shares the same passion for it, they will not purchase your products or services.

The 3 Steps I use to choose a market include:
1) Choosing a market (preferably) that you are passionate about.
2) Choosing a niche within this market and then…
3) Choosing a micro niche within that market

For example let’s say you’re a golf coach

Your Market would be the Golf Industry
Your Niche Market would be Golf Coaching
and your Micro Niche could be say Putting Coaching

If you are a financial adviser your market would be the Finance Industry, Your Niche would be Financial Advising and your Micro Niche could be high net worth surgeons requiring financial advice.

Can you see how much easier it is to design and implement your marketing plan when you have such a laser focused market niche?

It not only saves you time and money but a lot less effort than when you are trying to reach an undefined market of clients.

When it comes to defining your market niche it’s important to go one step further by making sure that the market niche you are creating involves your perfect clients – if it doesn’t then have a think about the types of micro niches that they are part of and that you would like to operate in.

And remember: If you want to go broke, market to everyone, if you want to be successful market to your micro niche.

Hi there, I’m Andrew McCombe from Activate your Business and welcome back to part two of step two of the 7 steps to becoming a trusted authority series.

Ok, now that you are clear on exactly what Micro Niche you want to play in you then you need to see if there is actually a market that already exists for this.
You can do this by;

1) Going to Amazon or www.pulse.ebay.com and look at the best sellers lists for all of their different categories of products. This will give you an instant look at what is most popular at the moment.

2) Go to www.yahoo.com/groups and enter the name of your micro niche or business and see how many groups there are.

3) Search www.Google.com for your keywords and see related searches at the bottom of the page.

4) Check out www.google.com/insights/search/ to track whether the trend for your business is rising or falling (and how they are categorizing the category for your business), track also the state or country that has the most traffic and where you should invest the most money on adwords. Check also top searches to see if a better market exists for you.

5) Go to www.twitter.com and search keywords relevant to your business (and see what is popular and trending at the moment)

6) Go to www.noblemarketsamurai.com and type in the keywords you want and it will tell you the most popular keywords...then go to any of the above suggestions and search the demand for such markets.

and if you already have an established business...

7) Go to www.surveymonkey.com and ask your clients what other products / services / value adds they want.

A very quick way to access a pool of your perfect clients is to identify a list of possible like-minded, non competing businesses or companies that are in the same or similar market niche to you and see if you can either;

1) Do a Joint Venture with them to add non-competing, value added services or products to their clients
2) Do a promotion to their clients and offer them a percentage of any sales
3) or simply just pay them to advertise to their database of clients

But remember when approach possible distribution partners its very important that you provide them value as one of your partners. Not only with the product or service you are offering but in regards to the value they will receive from you financially or brand awareness wise, so it is worth their while...

Too often distributor partnerships are not win/win and therefore do not last very long or even get off the ground at all.

As your trusted authority I would highly recommend that you take some time out at the end of this post (or as soon as you are able) and identify;

1) Who is your perfect client
2) Which micro niche do they play in
And
3) Who do you know who has a database of your perfect clients, that you could partner with
4) And then think about what value you could offer them

And then once you have done all of this

What is one action that you can take immediately that will help you to begin to attract your perfect clients?

And as always I challenge you to have achieved it before you read the next post.

And if you would like to speak with me personally about how I can support you to become a highly valued, trusted authority in your market niche then visit www.activateyourbusiness.com.au and click on the FREE Business Activation Session image for more details.

Re: Welcom Andrew McCombe - 7 Steps to be an Authority

Postby Andrew McCombe » Thu May 17, 2012 3:45 pm

Hi there, I’m Andrew McCombe from Activate your Business and welcome to part one of step 3 of the 7 steps to becoming a trusted authority series.

Today I want to talk about Activating the right types of products and services for your business.

When it comes to Activating your products and services its important that they include the following three steps;

Step 1: Identify exactly what you are offering to the market you have chosen (eg is it a product, service or both)
Step 2: Ensure that your Product or Service offers Value
Step 3: Ensure that your Product or Service solves a problem and / or provides a solution for your client

Now I know there will be a lot of coaches, consultants and advisers out there thinking how can I turn my service into a product, so I can sell it on the internet?

It took me a while to get my head around this when I first started out but the solution is simple. All you have to do is turn your service into information and sell it as an information product.

Information Products are the best types of products to be selling because compared to physical products information products cost you nothing or very minimal to produce and once you have created them once, you can sell them thousands of times over.

Because information products are low cost, have a high return and are extremely leveragable they are also highly profitable.

Once you have decided that you are going to create some information products for your business, the next step is identifying the ones you want to create. There are potentially hundreds of different types but overall they will fit the following categories;

Digital Products which are set up for online delivery in the form of
o E-books
o Streaming video
o Downloadable audios
o Smart Phone Apps
Physical Products such as:
o Dvd's
o Cd's
o Books and Workbooks etc
Experiential such as:
o Workshops
o Seminars
o Tele-seminars
o Webinars
o Conference calls
o Coaching …Consulting and Membership programs

You can create a combination of information products be they digital, physical or experiential and even better, you can record say an experiential workshop and then sell it again as a digital or physical product. The possibilities for creating information products are only bound by your creativity.

What’s more you don’t even have to create your own if you don’t want to:

Effectively there are 6 ways of acquiring information products:
1. You can create your own
2. You can create with another expert(s)
3. You can resell or rebrand an existing product (eg as an affiliate)
o To Resell means getting the rights to resell a product through your website
o To Rebrand means getting the rights to resell a product and being able to change the internal links so you can get credit for any further sales that may occur from reading the e-book, clicking on a link and making a purchase.

4. Next is to Private label, which means finding a product and private labelling it as your own. A good example here is nutrition products. In Australia there are only a few major nutrition supplement companies and yet there are thousands of different brands in the stores. The reason being is that most companies are marketing companies who have just brought the generic products and private labeled them. This can also happen with information products. The major benefit of private labeling is that you incur none of the production costs.

5. You can Public Domain Products

This is where you search the internet and find material that has lost its copyright and re-position it as your own. Perhaps the best known example of this is the book Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill. It lost its copyright years ago and now there all sorts of think and grow rich products and services.
6. Finally you can Ghostwrite Products
A Ghost Writer is someone who will write your book, articles, training manuals or whatever for you (in conjunction with your requirements) but depending on your arrangement, once you pay them you put your name on it and own the copyright.

As you can see creating Information Products does not have to be a complicated task and they can be created for literally any market niche in the world.

Once you are clear on what type of information products you want to offer the next question you need to ask is How much are you going to charge for your product(s) and/or services?

When pricing your product or service remember that the lower the price will usually mean the more customers you will get but the less perceived value of the product or service and the higher the price the greater the perceived value of your product or service but less customers.

So make sure you find and evaluate the right balance of price versus value offered based on how many customers you want to be working with. You may also want to offer a number of different price point options from free to high value, so that you can capture as many of your ideal clients at each level of the buying decision process.

Ok, now that you are clear on your price points it’s important for you to realize that when designing and creating your information products it’s not an ad hoc process. Your information products will build far greater rapport and reputation with your customers if you follow a proven system. The following system is one that I use;

Step One: Introduce yourself, your message and how it helps people so that your customers can understand the benefits of using it.
2. Identify the specific challenges that your niche market might have
3. Describe your personal story of experiencing the same challenges – this not only positions you as an expert but as an equal and will allow you to create a lot more rapport with your customers. Imagine a man talking about the pain of child birth if they have not been through it themselves? Would you trust them?
4. Then it’s time to share how you found a solution to the problem. This is where you share your biggest learnings and insights and how things began to change for you once you implemented them.
5. Next it’s time to highlight what some of the results have been. The results can be in your life you’re now experiencing, your clients as well as the results of other successful people.
Steps one to five describes the context of your message and the remaining 2 steps will describe the content behind your message.
6. The Solution. This is the HOW TO section of your message. This step spells out the step by step process, system or formula that you use and recommend.
7. What’s Next. Once people are clear on the HOW To system what is the next step they need to take to begin implementing and experiencing your message.

This part of the process also allows you as the trusted authority to create additional revenue streams by creating deeper learning environments for your message, such as Plans, Training manuals and Coaching Programs etc.

Well there it is, I hope you have enjoyed part 1 and 2 of this post and as your trusted authority I would highly recommend that you take some time out at the end of this post (or as soon as you are able) and identify;
1. What Problem does your Product or Service Solve?
2. What Type of Information Products can you create or acquire?
3. What Price will you charge for your products?

And then once you have done all of this
What is one action that you can take immediately that will help you to create your first information product?

And as always I challenge you to have achieved it before you read the next post.
And if you would like to speak with me personally about how I can support you to become a highly valued, trusted authority in your market niche then visit www.activateyourbusiness.com.au and click on the FREE Business Activation Session image for more details.

Bye for now.

Hi there, I’m Andrew McCombe from Activate your Business and welcome to part one of step four of the 7 steps to becoming a trusted authority series.

Now that you are clear on what market you want to sell in and what products and services you want to sell, it's time to create an online presence that best delivers you and your message to this market.

Now remember, you do not need a website to make money on the internet. You could:

o Set up a shop at eBay
o Sell your books through Amazon
o Be an affiliate/ reseller of other peoples products by simply referring users to their site via email etc and / or
o Promote your business on Facebook

But in the long term if you want to really create your brand as a trusted authority then a website may be the best option for you.

When it comes to websites there are different types that you could use.

Your standard website options include:

A Standard "Corporate" Style website, such as Dell.com

These websites are commonly used by companies who have many products and services and act as an online 'brochure' whereby they tell you everything about the products / services and the company etc.

The common problems with these websites are;

o They are too busy (because there is too much information) and therefore,
o As a potential customer it is often hard to find what you are looking for because you have been distracted by all the other information and,
o As the website owner its harder to guide your ideal clients directly to your most important message, product, service or action you want them to take.

The next type of website is called a Sales Letter website, such as;

o BURPIES by Brett.com (go to this website and enter your name and email address for the full sales letter. I also highly recommend this tool as an easy way for you to write sales letters)

These types of websites are commonly used by businesses who are wanting to sell only one product or service at a time and act as an online sales person for the product or service. They do a great job of explaining all of the features and benefits, as well as provide social proof with testimonies and get the reader excited with highly emotive language.

The common problems with these websites are;

o They are often deemed as far too long (although research does show that the longer the letter the higher the conversion rate),
o Readers who are familiar with them usually scroll straight to the bottom to see the price (and if they like the price, only then will they go back through the letter and read about the offering) and finally,
o Due to their highly emotive language, they are considered "hype" and are often not trustworthy and can sometimes effect the perceived brand reputation of the business.

The third type of website you could use is called A Blog (or web log), such as; Mashable.com

Blogs are great for Experts, Coaches, Advisers, Consultants and Thought Leaders as a way to share their thoughts instantly (in a longer version than say Twitter or Facebook), they also allow for feedback, comments and ratings and as an added bonus they are free to set up at Blogger.com & Wordpress.com

The last 3 types of websites are possibly the most common but the Secret Weapon when it comes to websites are the Dynamic websites with full CMS (or Content Management Systems), such as; activateyourlife.com.au.....activateyourweightloss.com.au and www.activateyourbusiness.com.au

The best part about this type of website technology is that at any stage, the content, the look and feel, the functionality and even the colours can be updated by the website owner. Ultimately meaning that as you grow as a business so too can your website, without having to get an entirely new website, which will cost you more time, money and effort.

The reason they are different to traditional websites is they are built with "Dynamic" modules that can be added and removed at any stage, depending on what the website owner wants to add or delete.

The problem with traditional "Static" websites is that once they have been built any changes will require a programmer to either recode the entire website, or sections of it. The obvious downside being that it costs more money, it takes longer and you as the website owner do not have the flexibility, functionality or control to make changes whenever you want.

The very first website I ever had built cost me over one hundred thousand dollars and then whenever I wanted to have any new feature added it would cost me over one hundred and fifty dollars per hour, plus I had to wait in line with all the other website designers clients before I could get my work finished, which often took up to six weeks.

All of the websites I now have cost me a small percentage of the original website and give me the flexibility to make changes whenever I want.
