Anne - thank you for the interesting post and the encouragement to pursue what I love!! I was very interested to see the stats about viewer actions when there is a video on the site. I was tossing up whether there was value in creating something and now I think it may certainly be of benefit. I have relaunched my brand under a new image of Ask Aunt Em and I am thinking of novel ways to introduce her. She wears a green and white striped apron you see and I think I can incorporate that into the video to talk about what Aunt EM does..... hmm just thinking out loud here. As I have only just learned how to build the website - I want to make sure my ambitions match my emerging skills! I know I have a great community here of helpful people especially Barb to provide advice.

Hi Geoff

I enjoyed all your comments and your writing hints are right on the mark. I haven't written a book yet, but I have a couple of papers published in scientific journals with my name on them. When you are writing scientific papers, clarity and simplicity are paramount. Those papers that are reporting the results of experiments, have to be presented in a manner so that the experiment can be repeated by another researcher.

I also am very involved in writing the scripts, especially for our 4 wheel drive travel DVDs. Here again your writing hints are very important - clear and simple writing, with ideas organised logically. Using the active voice is another that is important to maintain clarity and to keep it interesting.

And editing your writing is important - even up to a week or two later, or when you are refreshed from all that writing effort helps too.

Thank you for your post

Anne - I didn't know that you wrote scientific papers - the things we don't know about those we know! I am patiently waiting to read your 'nearly finished' E-book - when will I see the completed product?

Hi Marion, - being advernturous and marketing yourself is definitely a step in 'thinking outside the square'. With your Antarctica adventurer I loved the way you prepared yourself e.g. sitting in a commercial freezer while you spun to see if there were any unexpected difficulties you would be facing when you finally were sitting on the ice in Antarctica! BUT - the fact that you had the media to cover your freezer 'test run' was exceptional thinking!

You did another thing with this adventure (that I can advise other business operators to consider) - you involved a charity in your activities. By heavily promoting Mawson's Hut (not just you and your business) you gained even more attention and was even introduced to the Governer General, film star Jack Thompson and other dignatories at a gala affair in Sydney, when you auctioned the replica balaclava that you knitted from the wool you had spun sitting outside Mawson's Hut, in the snow and ice. All great stuff - well done! You certainly followed a simialr path of 'Fame and Fortune' as myself. Then all the speaking engagements you were invited to do certainly did not hurt your business! You became a very public 'expert' in a very short period of time.

Have a look at the casual stance on Marion when she is meeting Jack Thompson!!!! http://spinningyarninantarctica.com/blog/?cat=9 This is a real 'Lady of Confidence' and self assurance!

And last month you took a stand at the Melbourne Royal Show for the full period of time that the show ran. How great it was to have so many 'assistants' volunteer to be with you, selling, taking orders, spinning - you are a true lady of action Marion - you are my hero!

Hi Frances

Thank you for your comments. I had a look at your website - it is engaging, interesting and informative. You obviously enjoy anything to do with words. It's great to see in this age where spelling and grammar appear to be forgotten arts.

All the best with all your endeavours.

Hi Barb

We have won a couple of awards for our videos - one was for Stage Production - a Dance School performance. The other was in Documentary category for one of our 4 wheel drive travel videos Tasmania - the Devil's Playground. We had a lot of fun making this video, starting with the ferry ride from Melbourne to Devonport. We met our fellow travelling companions on the ferry ride (some of them we did know). Most of them were related or friends from Sydney and right from the start we all clicked. We had great challenges and adventures on Tassie's west coast under the leadership of our tour guide who showed us fantastic locations and amazing sights. The east coast tourist spots we visited without the tour leader, but still had a lot of fun. Perhaps it showed in the video as we won the award.

Last year we were finalist in the Documentary category for our 4 wheel drive video of On the Track of Burke and Wills, which was coverage of the trip we did in 2010 to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the Burke and Wills expedition of 1860.

We always try to make our videos more than just a convoy travelling from point a to point b, and so we add in as much information about the areas we are travelling through, road conditions, camping opportunities, campfire cooking etc. And in the case of Burke and Wills we also included information about the expedition itself. We included images from the State Library and from the National Library too. And the trip followed the route of the expedition as closely as possible. It is great to be able to travel this wonderful land of ours and to follow in the footsteps of history too.

As to the ebook - I will get to it one day soon.
