Welcome Nat Smith - Business You Were Born To Create

Postby Barbara Gabogrecan » Sat Jun 01, 2013 4:32 pm

We run a home based business which means that our business is either fully based in the home, or the business is run from the home even though we may travel to and fro to clients. But can you have a home based business if you do not have a home?

Our guest expert this week is Nat Smith. She is an author, mentor and the co-Publisher for ‘Into-Me-I-See’ Digital Magazine. She also hosts the ‘Into-Me-I-See TV’ (featured on the US ENN Network) and the ‘Into-Me-I-See’ on the Motivational radio. After a vibrant 13 year career in the Australian Federal Police, Natalie changed her life completely.

Nat now lives her dream life of no fixed residency; travelling the world doing professional house-sitting, staying a few weeks or months in some amazing places around the world.

Nat will not only make us envious, but she will share with you how you can have the ‘Business You Were Born To Create’. Her posts begin on Monday 17th June.
She will touch on such subjects as:-

• Know who you really are rather than who you ‘think’ you are
• Don’t deny your uniqueness or you will begin to feel discomfort.
• We are programmed to create. Do you create consciously or by default?
• When you create consciously you base your life on what you love.
• Doing only what you love is the key to success in business
• When you do what you love you never work another day in your life
• Include your lifestyle in your mix
• Ego based goals verses heart based visions
I am sure you will find the discussion this week a most interesting one. Join in and make Nat feel welcome to our Forum.

Bonjour fellow Aussie home based business owners... and greetings from France! It is my great pleasure to share with you my story this week and more importantly my insights about moving into a space where you can honestly say to yourself... 'I am now living the business I have been born to bring into this world, and I love every part of who I am BEING when I do it'. Nice place to be! :)

We are going to have some fun this week and stir the pot... alot! So let's jump in...

OH THE MAGNIFICENT STORIES WE TELL OURSELVES

Who said you need to have a home to be a home based business? Well actually we do have a home, it’s just not ours and it moves around a lot! You see my partner Jodie and I are professional housesitters. ‘What is that?’ I hear you ask. I asked the same thing not all that long ago!

A professional housesitter is someone who travels the world, or a certain region, and minds people’s houses and beloved pets whilst they are away. Yes an international babysitter of all things dog, cat, fish, snake, horse and any other weird and wonderful pet variety people co-habitat with! Indeed a crazy, often confronting and dream lifestyle all rolled into one :P

But it was not always this exotic and free flowing. In fact only a short six months ago I could never have imagined the freedom I now feel doing what I love each day, with the person I love, BEING who I love.

Of course there has been some MASSIVE personal and business wakeup calls along the way to get to this point; yes no one escapes the true hero’s journey here!

None more so for us than in Dubai. Please let me take you on a little journey in this first post…

Six months ago, Jodie and I were living in Dubai after leaving Sydney some 18 months prior. Yes, we were headed for the promise land, to join thousands of other ex-pats, where our credit card debts were going to be miraculously paid off and we were going to set ourselves up financially…

I started at the position that had taken us over there, as Business Development Manager and instructor for a company that trains Police – a relatively easy job given my previous 13 year career in the Australia Federal Police.

A month or so later Jodie was unexpectedly offered to start a company with a business partner where he would put in the finance and she would do the internet marketing work, something that had been her background for many years. Oh the joy… what a perfect opportunity; our plan is already coming together, and so soon!

So in we jumped. We set up the company, at massive expense as it is in Dubai (they might not tax you, but boy do they get you in other ways!) and the doors for business were open.

In my infinite wisdom, I decided about that same time that my days of working for someone else were over and I could wait no longer to roll out the many projects I had envisaged for years. This was it… time to make my move! What better than a Dubai company, in the land of plenty, to get them underway. Surely this is the ‘real’ reason we have been drawn to Dubai in the first place (Yes DO notice the justifications starting to creep in here!) :?

So I quit my job and started work in the new company the next week. As weeks passed there seemed to be just so much that Jodie and I had to do to get us up and running; the office setup, the computer systems and all the myriad of legals. So much so we were finding it hard to get time to even find clients let alone service them. So the age-old business start-up question arose - Do we take on employees or wait till we have more cashflow? We decided we could not wait. The rent on the office was crazy let alone other fixed overheads, so we took on two employees. This would get us going now!

Clients started rolling in. It was working! Our partner was finding us clients that needed stuff done. Mainly needing websites done actually. Not that our business was creating websites exactly but what the hell; it’s close to what we do, we do have the skills to do it, we need the money and this is what is flowing to us so it must be right. The opportunities are pouring in now!

Week after week Jodie and I were in the office till all hours; even I was doing internet stuff to keep up.

But a feeling kept niggling away that something was not right with our world. Neither of us were actually happy. In fact when we finally stopped and got really honest with ourselves, we were downright miserable. We had fallen into the classic business trap; we had just bought ourselves a very expensive job… one that we were becoming increasingly aware of, that we didn’t even like!

We had been living against every knowing we had about being in the flow of life’s abundance… and it was showing. We justified everything we had done over the months in our heads as the ‘right’ thing but now the cracks of truth were appearing. The business was based on false motivations and head based justifications, and whilst we believed we were truly living from our hearts, the absolute truth was we were not, and we knew it deep down. We had bought into our own illusion and fantasy that our business would give us all we were looking for; that if we just got this part sorted out THEN we will live the life we love. How common is this belief!

The truth is NOTHING in the outside world can truly fulfill you, you must find it within. I knew this so well from my own consciousness studies for the previous 10 years, and yet I had been lured by the bright shiny object again; the 'outside' thing that would heal my financial wounds and then give me the life I so knew I could have. My motives really had been heartfelt in so many ways and that was the most confusing part... I really did feel deep down inside that I was here to live a magnificent life and not to struggle, yet here I was doing more struggling and suffering than I had ever experienced before. What was wrong with me?

Meanwhile back in the business it was scary times… very scary. Something has shifted and suddenly nothing was going as we had planned, and more importantly nothing we did seem to make it right. Clients argued with us and left, no one felt inspired to do the work we HAD to do, and confusion became the order of everyday. As much as we wanted to write up a more solid business plan it just would not flow no matter how much we tried. Then our business partner stopped the cashflow injections. We were caught between a rock and a hard place. It was falling apart fast and we seemed to have no way to stop it. We were definitely getting some wake up calls!

If this had been a normal business at home then we would have wound it up there and then… it was the obvious choice; but over in Dubai we were on 12 month contracts for our expensive rent and overheads, so no getting out of any of it. They were cashing those post-dated cheques for the next six months rent no matter what was happening for us. A major deal over there in the UAE, as they do not have civil courts. When you bounce a cheque they just bring in the police who arrest you and take you to jail, three months for every bounced cheque. And yes you still have to pay the money somehow!

By the end of 2012, I was only 48 hours away from going to jail for nine months for bounced cheques.

Help!! Something had to give and something had to change… and I knew that 'something' had to be ME!

To be continued…

I think this is the first post from one of our guest experts that I have read and felt as though I was in the story.....and I cannot wait to see how both you and I come through this!!!!

WOW, Nat - what a fantastic start for your week. I must find your books and get one read to me (as you may know, since my stroke I cannot read and had to get someone to read your post to me) - I don't suppose you have any talking books?

Please note: The story in this post follows the last post, so you will need to read that first for it to make much sense :)

“Being on the tightrope is living; everything else is waiting.”

- Karl Wallenda -

Well, according to the above quote I was definitely ‘living’ by this stage. That’s a relief! Didn’t overly feel like it at the time though.

The stress was massive. My heart was pounding every minute and I felt sick to the stomach constantly. No matter how hard I looked, every option presented a closed door. There seemed no way out.

Running alongside all of this was a peculiar irony. I had only a few months earlier been part-time instructing the Police Prison Guards and Officers in defensive tactics with my old company. Yes I actually would have instructed alot of the prison guards that supervised me in jail! ‘Oh Mohammad, you know that is not the right way to put handcuffs on me, you have been trained better than that!’

Ahh sometimes you just have to laugh at the craziness of it all… and so often we did. It was getting so ridiculous at times that it all had to be a big joke surely! I can now vouch that laughing and seeing the humor in the craziness of life at times, is actually not all that crazy! It really does make you feel that much better and remind you to lighten up so you can see more clearly. When I was so far in my head of stories that I felt sure was going to play out, I could see nothing else but doom and gloom. It was not at all surprising that options to free myself were not in my reality. I would not have seen them even if they were slapping me in the face, which they probably were!

Another irony (there were plenty!)… it was in the time of facing just about everything that I didn’t want both in my life and in my business, that I started to get a real sense of what I did want. I started to get strong visuals and senses of how I would love my life and my business to be. It’s weird, but that’s how it works so I found out. As much as we fight the contrast and feel the discomfort of what we don’t want when faced with it, it is actually helping us define how we would love our lives to look and make more conscious choices towards that. Ahh very cleaver… sneaky, but cleaver!

So I started diving into the feelings of what I would love to have. My head was going nuts, telling me I SHOULD focus on all the problems of the business as the only way to find a solution and make them go away. It bought up nightmare feelings of fear about what would happen if I stopped focusing on all the problems. Yes prison was one of those! But focusing on what I didn’t want to happen was my default programing, I had been doing that since we opened the doors to the company; in fact I may have been doing that most of my life now I think about it!

But something was driving me inside to say ‘this time focus on how you want your life and your business to look instead. This time do something different to what you usually do and see what happens.’

I figured by this stage I really didn’t have anything to lose… literally!

So I followed my intuition and I finally just stopped and surrendered! I sat there for hours and focused on the experiences I so desired to have in my life; with Jodie and my friends and family, the outdoors, the effortless flow of business where I did not have to be tied to a desk or office but could travel freely in the world with it, where clients came into our space who loved to be there, and the heartfelt connections with conscious people in my work that help me to expand and stretch everyday in a really loving and supportive way. This is what would make my heart sing. I focused on expansion in every form, and by damn it was working. I felt strangely different, but yet somehow it was all very familiar all at the same time. My heart was opening again; I could feel it even physically in my chest. I was vibrating with a different, more hopeful energy despite the craziness of what my outside world was presenting to me. It was literally like my reality was losing it’s power over me and instead I was feeling my inner power kicking in. :o

At times my head jumped back in and worry was yet again taking over me. My mind was not satisfied and it wanted solutions right now; yet every solution it came up with was being met with the exact counter idea. I was starting to see the never-ending cyclical game of the mind – justify for something and then justify against it to the same degree, so they cancel each other out, leaving me with no solution at all. It happened time and time again. It was becoming so obvious that my head held no solution to any of this, and in fact I might just be losing my mind completely!

And that was indeed what was happening… I was losing my mind. Getting out of it finally. It was during those hours and many more of inner truth searching and reconnection to myself that the light started to creep in. I saw that I had been the only one boxing myself in all these months and it was my head that had been the culprit. When I saw what I had been doing to create my own woes and decided to shift my focus from problem to conscious solution, everything shifted… immediately. Suddenly everything felt lighter, even though nothing in my physical world had changed at all. Options of how we could move forward and extract ourselves from the situation popped into my head. Suddenly Jodie had workable solutions. It was like my whole reality and everyone in it was changed. The limited structures were now collapsing bit by bit and my reality was completely supporting this process.

And as for the bounced cheques and threat of prison (yes finally!)… we spoke to the Media City Administration Office and after some negotiation and hard bargaining they agreed that they actually could overlook the delay in payment and gave us three more weeks to pay it. What is an absolute rock solid blanket rule of the whole United Arab Emirates had been mysteriously bent. Almost disappointing in some ways!

Over the ensuing months, options for paying our other rent and bills came to us. We asked which ones felt true to act on and the money came in. When fears and emotions came up we acknowledged them, felt them and watched them dissolve.

It was a process of constant focus on what we loved and feeling the vibration of that exclusively, but we managed to pay all the outstanding amounts due. We then sold the shell of the company structure as soon as the 12 months were up and got out… both of the company and of Dubai.

We had had an incredibly difficult yet life changing experience. We had gained our insights, grew enormously from it both individually and as a couple, thanked it fully, let it go, and now it was time to take those insights and start a new chapter in our lives… ;)

The whole company experience had been like a massive weight on our chests… and as two women that is far from comfortable! And the selling of the business like a thousand tons had been lifted finally and we could breathe once again.

So after about a few hundred well-deserved drinks  (shhh don’t tell Dubai!) it was down to NEW business. It was time for some big changes. An injection of new energy.

So here we go… Our biggest change and now absolute Number One Business Rule…

Never again will we knowingly compromise on doing what feels true for us in business or in life. Or do something that does not inspire us or feel like a fun thing to do; no matter how much money it promises to make, or clients it will bring in.

There, that is it! :o Pretty simple really… but all so very profound when you dive into what that creates.

We have knocked back so many opportunities in our business in the last six months because the only reason we would have done it would be to make money; there was no actual element of I would ‘love to do it’ or ‘love to experience that’.

Everything in our business, and in our life for that matter, is now measured to this ‘would I LOVE to experience that?’ benchmark and I cannot begin to tell you how freeing and exciting that feels. Now I actually want to work at my business each day.

In fact when you live form this space, your business becomes your life. Not in terms of spending all your time just working I don’t mean, but the two become inseparable. Your business becomes your lifestyle. People say why don’t you take some time out, and my answer to that is ‘take some time out from what I love… to do what? Something I love less?’

Doing what you love is never a burden or difficult. Yes you have challenges, we would be bloody bored without them, but you don’t have to suffer them. Challenges are meant to be uplifting and exciting… rise to the challenge and get some new energy happening type thing.

Do what you love and you will honestly never work another day in your life… it is impossible. It becomes play :P

As adults we have such a huge issue around play especially in business. It conjures up all sorts of things; that it is frivolous, childish, we won’t get our work done, people will slack off, clients will not take us seriously…

But play has been shown to be one of the best motivators of people. After all, it really is hard to keep motivated day after day about something that does not excite you. It’s funny what we do to ourselves though; we know we are not all that excited or inspired to do something but then we beat ourselves up when we either won’t do it at all, or we have to push ourselves to keep doing it. Of course you don’t want to do it… it doesn’t excite you! You are not meant to want to do it! Either find something you do love about it, or give it to someone else to do who does love it. Let them knock their socks off about it!

Play and having fun also makes you more present with what you are doing and therefore increases productivity. Don’t believe me… just look at kids playing. You call them, and you call them, and you call them for dinner. They’re not listening, they are 100% totally dedicated to the experience they are having. If that is not productivity I don’t know what is

Let’s look at Google and their take on this whole play thing. Every one of the Google Headquarters around the word are play zones. They have slippery dips and fireman poles to get from one floor to the other, sleeping pods, games rooms, areas to have pillow fights. Blimey, who wouldn’t want to go to work everyday... it sounds awesome! And so it is. People do want to go to work at Google everyday, they love it and they give over and above their requirements because it is fun and they appreciate that. There are no mistakes to Google being one of the giants of our modern business times.

Play and doing what you love has an energy about it. Think about someone you have met or know that does what they truly love everyday. They know that what they offer the world comes from their heart and it oozes out of them in service to others. Magnetic aren’t they! You want to be around them yes? There is a reason for that… they are tuned into love… the very thing we are all naturally programed for. We attract to them as they reflect to us the inner most part of us… love. We want to be around them. It feels amazing and we want more of them and what they offer.

Now imagine your business like that! Where clients attract to you and WANT to be around you and what you have to offer. Where there is such a magnetic energy around you that customer’s are drawn to you like moths to a flame.

This is effortless business. Not going out and chasing clients and trying to convince them to use your services or buy your products. But instead having clients come to you, to want to be in your energy.

Give your business from your heart and they will come… it is a Law of the Universe ;)

Doing business from the heart is a constant check in for us. Every moment you have to be alert to buying into things other than a love for it, and it can be so easy to slip into the head justifications without even knowing; ‘well I sort of love it’, ‘maybe I’ll love it once I get into it’ (sounds like some relationships I have had!) and one of the most common ‘I am good at it, so it must mean I love it!’

Be truly honest with yourself. Put your fears aside for one moment ask is this true for me to do? And if it is, act on it.

There is a simple thing I have come to realise; if you only ever choose to do what you love and fill your space only with things and people that bring you joy, and leave everything else for someone else, you have to end up living a life you love by default.

Same goes for business. If you only choose work that you love and inspires you each day, and clients that you love to work with that uplift you and make you laugh or feel great to be around, and leave everything else, you have to end up with a business that feels awesome to you everyday.

Business does not have to be full of compromises. And nor does life. That is just a belief many of us have bought into. It is not meant to be like that. You can have all you love, both in your business and in your life. Love never involves sacrifice of all that you truly desire; it includes all that you truly desire. Love is inclusive. Only fear excludes.

We buy so much into the fear without even knowing we are doing it. We worry about not having enough cashflow, that clients will not want our next offering or that we will miss out on something if we do not say yes to a particular opportunity. All the while creating that exact scenario, then we beat ourselves up and wonder what we did wrong, or why we are so screwed up at business to not get it right; maybe I should go and just get a job, maybe I am not meant for business, or maybe I should do a different business, or follow someone else’s system, or offer a different product, or update my website, or change my message… arrhhh… you know the drill!

All the while, never realising that it was simply because we focused all of our attention on what we didn’t want through our worry. The Universe does not discriminate about what you want. To the Universe everything is perfect, not good nor bad; they are human labels on things based on our judgments. So the Universe will happily send you anything you are focused on… good or bad. It’s all just energy anyway!

It is so simple, yet it can be one of the most difficult things in the world… to focus only on what gets you ripping out of bed in the morning to get into, to the exclusion of ALL else.

But it is oh soooo worth it! :P

Hi Nat,
Great message, "do what you love, not for the money, but because you love it"

Obviously a time that you would ask yourself whether you would do it over again if you have the choice. The problem would be, that you would not be where you are now if you didn't go through it. Sometimes we have to go to the very edge to learn the lesson and start to create what we really want.

Focusing on what you want and not where you are currently at, can be so hard to do, but as you proved, it is the way forward. another great lesson for all of us.

I look forward to some more installments of your story.

Hi Peter,

Thanks for your feedback. Yep a crazy story but no I would not have wanted it any other way. One thing that Jodie and I did do throughout our whole experience was take the time to see how each part was serving us and how it was supporting our journey to break free of our own limiting beliefs about what COULD be created. I am now a lover of reality. If it happening it is necessary and supporting my journey here, and just because I may not be able to immediately see how something is serving me does not mean that it is not... it just means I haven't seen it yet. I believe that the Universe (for want of a better term) is always doing everything to support us to wake up to the truth that we are already powerful creators. It is up to each one of us to chose to see it... or not! That is our free will part ;) I am also a firm believer that you are never given anything you cannot handle. It's amazing what we can do when we have to and often it's in those really dark times that our true capabilities come out.

Another irony was the name of our Dubai company was 'Qualia Experiences'. Qualia means you cannot truly know something until you have a direct experience of it for yourself. For example I could tell you all about love, describe it to you, what it feels like etc. But until you have been in love for yourself you will really have no idea what it is REALLY like. And your experience of love may be completely different to mine. So I guess we had our own 'Qualia Experience' in setting up our company 'Qualia Experiences' and seeing it all crumble before our eyes! Funny!

Thanks Peter. Have fun... of course! :D

Hi Nat,

Over 11 years ago, I became a funeral celebrant, something I so loved and wanted to do.

Trying to learn as much as I could, I did a course to do a business plan, the person running the course told me to give up and not even try, between the projected income and SWOT analysis, it did not look good. But I was passionate about what I wanted to do, I was determined to give it a go and I didn't listen to all of those 'experts' who kept telling me to give up before I had even started! I refused to listen! I REALLY wanted to do it. And I did! 11 years later and I don't feel like I have worked a day in that time. Sure there have been services that have been more challenging, but as I explain to people, it is like being an artist, sometimes you are given the most beautiful canvas and magnificent oils and asked to go and paint a picture - and times when you are given a torn off scrap of paper and a blunt crayon and you still have to create the picture - but they, in their own way, inspire and force me to get out of my comfort zone. I have now gone on to set up a training business for aspiring funeral celebrants that is unique (a six day live in total immersion course), as well as holding Master Classes around Australia for those who need some inspiration. This isn't work either - it is Joy with a capital 'J'!

Persistence and Passion are Powerful things!

The last two weeks have seen me quoted in a cover story for The Age/SMH supplement Pulse, 'Deathiquette' as well as in the small business section under Death Becomes Her http://www.theage.com.au/small-business ... 2nrh9.html it is amazing the people who have read it. All because I do something I love. I try to encourage others not to be aware of the problems you might face, but don't let that be the deciding factor on whether you should do something you are absolutely passionate about!

How can I not love what I do when I get this in an email: "Thank you so much Robyn for making the service for Dad so wonderful yesterday. We were rapt with the great way you handled it and consider ourselves very lucky to have had you perform the services for both Mum and now Dad. Again many thanks for your great work – although I know you treat it as something way beyond work which is terrific.
Kind Regards, IB"

And people wonder why I say I have THE best job in the world????

As I sit, surrounded by boxes after just having moved house, I decided to take some time off to unpack, only taking on families who have requested my services (usually around 50% of my business) - 10 of the last 12 funerals I have conducted have been requests - the other two? Helping funeral directors out who had difficult situations! And the boxes? Still unpacked, but I think the universe was just compensating for the expense of moving - well that's my story of why they are still unpacked - and I'm sticking to it!

Thanks for your posts, I look forward to reading more because I love people who inspire people - well done!
With my kind regards,

Hi Robyn

Congratulations Robyn!! Congratulations on doing what you love and never giving up on yourself despite all the people in the outside world telling you their opinions, and good on you for giving your love in service to others. Your story very much inspired both Jodie and I just now. It is not at all surprising people are now wanting to learn from you... inspiration and passion incites inspiration and passion.

I read a quote the other day, that Jodie and I loved so we put it ion our website. It says:
"The Planet does not need more successful people. The planet desperately needs more peacemakers, healers, restorers, storytellers and lovers of every kind.' The Dalai Lama.

I believe people who do what they love in business are all of those things rolled into one. That is the definition of success to me these days. The true hero's are the ones who rewrite history and reality according to how they want it and what feels true for them.

Love ya work Robyn!! Thankyou so much for sharing.

Much love
Nat
